Merumaya continue to release skincare that is both effective and affordable. The two latest products from the range are the Youth Preservation Moisturiser which launched in the autumn last year and Retinol Resurfacing Treatment which was released this month. It makes sense to review the products together as when you are using a retinol product, it is imperative that you apply an SPF every day. This protects the glowing new skin cells that are brought to the surface after the retinol has got rid of the old dead cells.
Merumaya is not a brand of unrealistic claims; the moisturiser is said to provide moisturisation in a lightweight formula. The resurfacing treatment promises to provide all of the benefits of a retinol product (skin resurfacing and regeneration) without the irritation. This is absolutely the case for both products.
The ingredients in the moisturiser are impressive. There are three weights of hyaluronic acid which means that different layers within the skin gain the benefit of moisture retention, not just the surface of the skin. Mangosteen, baobab and vitamin E botanical oils provide a high level of anti-oxidant action – fending off damaging free radical activity on your skin.
The big ticket ingredients however is the clinically proven matrixyl peptide and babchi seed derived retinol like ingredient which conditions and smooths the skin. With the Retinol Resurfacing Treatment you get the maximum permitted concentration of vitamin A, with a hit of matrixyl which stimulate collagen, sea fennel which reduces inflammation and improves skin tone, hyaluronic acid and squalene.
I used the Youth Preservation Moisturiser consistently for two weeks and then a further two weeks on an ad hoc basis. The Retinol I used every other day for a month and I have normal combination skin
If you enjoy a light but rich moisturiser you will like the Youth Preservation Moisturiser. If you have a very oily skin, you may find the shea butter in it is too rich for you. I did find that I got dewy about four hours after wearing it. The retinol is a night treatment that you apply after you have cleansed and moisturised. It feels like a moisturiser on the skin – slightly richer than the Youth Preservation Moisturiser. There is absolutely no irritation on the skin at all. In the morning your skin is hydrated and smooth.
The Youth Preservation Moisturiser forms a great base for makeup; it does not leave a white layer on rich skin tones so you can apply it and leave your home straight away. If you are new to retinols or concerned about irritation, Merumaya is a great place to start. It looks and feels just like a moisturiser but the effect on the skin means that the products that you use in the day apply better and absorb better. Both products provide a significant amount of bang for your buck ingredients wise. If you are starting to get serious about your skincare, this is a great place to start.
Merumaya Youth Preservation Moisturiser and the Retinol Resurfacing Treatment are priced at £33.50 each.
