Amber Roohi is a writer who has recently launched For That Girl, which is a website that sets out to inspire and motivate brown beauties (of all shades of melanin) by creating articles and stories that they can identify with and aspire to. She took time out to tell me all about her teen skincare life.
My mother has always been very dedicated to her skincare routine, so at the age of 12 she bought me my first face wash, toner and moisturiser (all Olay) and encouraged me to develop my own morning and evening routine. My mum is my main influence, for sure. She’s always stressed the importance of taking care of my skin, from never sleeping in makeup to wearing sunscreen daily. Whenever I have even an inkling to skip out on my skincare rituals, her voice is there in my head, reminding me to do what’s best for my skin instead of being lazy.
As a teen I started out using all Olay products; The original pink beauty fluid moisturiser, the blue toner and then either baby wipes or another Olay gentle face wash to cleanse. I realised early on that my skin was pretty sensitive and face washes, no matter how gentle, would dry my skin out and sometimes lead to breakouts – especially with exfoliating face washes. Although cleansing, toning and moisturising will always be the three most important skincare elements, I’ve realised that I can remix them to fit my own needs. Using baby wipes to cleanse and then just rinsing with water before toning is something that works really well for me and keeps my skin clear, so I’ve just gone with it, even though others may swear by washing with a soapy face wash.
I think I used those Olay products my mum put me on for at least 15 years, from the age of 12, right up until I left university and beyond. It was at around the age of 25 that I decided to start trying different products. Olay had served me well but I found I was in need of a thicker moisturiser and some variety. I graduated on to some Aveeno products, tried out the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial SPF Moisturiser SPF 30 and several different toners. For now, I’ve settled with La Roche-Posay Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid for daytime SPF moisturising as it’s oil free, Olay Age Defying Night Cream for the evening and Simple Micellar Water to tone (even though Micellar Water’s are used for cleansing, I like to use them as a joint secondary clean up and toner). I also use Almond Oil to cleanse if I’m wearing a lot of makeup and if not, my main go-tos for cleaning are still Superdrug Unfragranced Baby Wipes.
I also make my own face masks with natural ingredients. One of my favourites is with bentonite clay, manuka honey, turmeric, lemon juice and yoghurt. The bentonite clay is great for clearing out pores, the turmeric and honey are anti-inflammatories and the lemon juice and yoghurt help to brighten the skin. It’s a really easy and refreshing one to do.
