Just when you though there were enough nude eyeshadow palettes, along comes NUDE’tude by theBalm Cosmetics. It contains 12 matte and shimmer shades and comes with double sides brush and a mini eyeshadow primer.
I found the brush to be unusable as it was so stiff and difficult to work with. It was painful to line my eyes with it and it was impossible to blend the shadows. That is unlikely to deter beauty lovers, who will undoubtedly have their favourite brushes anyway. The inclusion of the eyeshadow primer sample was a nice touch and much more useful.
The packaging is pretty and in a vintage style. It is cardboard so it’s light which makes it good for travelling. Inside there is a large mirror which is always helpful and there are six nude women whose modesty is preserved by two shadows each. The design is certainly cheeky and fun but for me it is unsettling that there isn’t a single Woman of Colour in the line-up. It makes me wonder whether this palette is for brown beauties at all.
Now, onto the shadows. They are all cool-toned which was something new for me as I prefer warm colours. They make a statement on me rather than looking natural so technically this isn’t my nude.
Sassy is a shimmer ice-white, which is a good statement shade for the inner corner of my eye. It blends beautifully to a cool, silvery sheen. Snobby is a cool gold which swatches a little patchy but blends easily. Stubborn is a smooth metallic pink which comes up quite pale one me. It is well pigmented and blends out to a gorgeous pink sheen. Stand-offish is a highly-reflective metallic shade which has good pigment although like Snobby, it goes on a little patchy but blends well.
Selfish is a cool-brown which looks like a dark taupe on me. It is gorgeously blendable and pigmented. Sultry is a cool matte brown which has some fall-out on swatching but blends nicely. Sophisticated goes on like a dark matte brown with very fine gold and red metallic elements which make a very pretty reflection. There is a tiny bit of fall-out which easily blends away. Seductive is a smooth, cool bronze which is very soft and well pigmented.
The matte burgundy shade is Sexy which needs layering to build up the colour intensity. It has more fall-out than the others mentioned above and because it is cool, it looks like a dried red wine stain on me! Silly has a deep brown base with lots of gold and red shimmer. It takes a lot of work to build up the colour in that you have to press hard to get the base shade to come through. If you are gentle you only get the fine glitter so it is best to use it as a sparkle layer on top of Sexy. Serious is a very pigmented matte black and Sleek is a very deep, cool brown. They both go on patchy and are difficult to blend.
Unfortunately this palette is a miss for me. Even if I were to depot the shadows to solve my packaging issues, the poor performance of the matte shadows is disappointing. You always need a couple of good matte shadows to anchor the look and this palette didn’t quite provide that and in my opinion the other shades were not enough to make up for that.
theBalm Cosmetics NUDE’tude Eyeshadow Palette is priced at £30.00.
