Nine Black-Owned Makeup Brushes

Influencer, Mariam Musa has launched her own brush collection. This adds her to the growing list of Black women in the UK who have created their own makeup brush brands.

There are lots of vegan, cruelty free synthetic brush and sponge options in the beauty space, we feature nine Black-owned makeup brushes.

MIMA Cosmetics

Mariam Musa has created these super-soft synthetic bristles to keep you looking fierce. The collection consists of 12 brushes that helps you to create any look you desire. Also the flawless handles and sleek pouch are perfectly sized to take your glam everywhere you go.

By Joy Adenuga

This collection by the successful makeup artist dropped last weekend. It contains five brushes which are 100% vegan with high-grade synthetic hair featuring ombre grey tips for a modern look. The handles are stylishly black with gloss shimmer coated wood and shaped with accurate application in mind. This collection is right behind the heels of the eyelash range that Joy launched last month. I guess she is on a roll.

MakeupbyTammi

British Youtuber Tammi Clarke released makeup brushes as part of her new cosmetics line a few months ago. The Crystal Collection is available with amethyst or clear faceted handles. Go for the full set which has four face, and six eye brushes. Each set comes with a holographic makeup bag that will house a full face of makeup as well as your brushes.  These shapes are standard so this is a great affordable set, great for beginners and makeup enthusiasts who want to keep wash day to a minimum.

House of Tara

Nigerian pro MUA, Tara Fela-Durotoye started her makeup school in 2004. She has been teaching makeup artists in Nigeria for over a decade across 14 locations. Her brush line is extensive as it supports the techniques she teaches. The Prof Brush Set, consists of 16 brushes and a brush belt. It is a must for those going down the pro route that want hardwearing tools that will survive constant washing and sanitising.

OPV Beauty

Sisters Opiyemi and Bukola Adeyomo set up OPV in 2017 as a safe and inclusive space to express their beauty. The highlight from their brush range is the 15 piece set. The two tone brushes contrast beautifully against the black ferrule and wooden handles. If you are looking for a full upgrade of your makeup tools, this set, which is housed in a zip up case would fit the bill.  It includes an eyebrow spoolie, lip liner, brow and lash groomer,  as well as complexion colour and eye brushes in a variety of shapes. You could easily do a full face of makeup with this set.

Juvias Place

Chichi Eburu created Juvia’s Place in 2014 and took the beauty world by storm with her affordably priced highly pigmented eyeshadow. Over the years, Chichi has developed foundations, blushers and lip products for the brand.  The brushes were one of the earliest elements of the brand and continue to be a popular feature with brushes being sold as sets and individually.  The top pick however is the Face Blend Brush. Don’t let the small size fool you.  The bristles are densely packed so they give you coverage, but the length of the bristles give the air brushed finish. Of course, you can use it for blush, highlighter, concealer contour and even bronzer but it is a great foundation brush.

Pat McGrath

British beauty matriarch Pat McGrath needs no introduction. Her award-winning beauty line is the best seller in Selfridges and has global recognition and praise.  There is a small edit of brushes in her range but if you are looking for something special, the Skin Fetish: Sublime Shine Brush Duo is a must. Both brushes are angled which means you can get into the nooks and crannies on your face easily.  The larger brush is great for precise foundation application, contour and liquid highlight.  The smaller brush gives more precision for under eye concealing and can be used for her special blitz shades.

Makeup Addiction

Djimbi Djevdet’s brand, Makeup Addition created in 2012 has the most comprehensive selection of makeup brushes in our list. The Vegan Core Set is a unique collection for makeup loves that prioritise perfecting their base. The small paddle brush is perfect for under paining highlighter and contour, the buffer brush for powder, liquid and cream products but the oversized fan brush is the game changer. Perfect for setting and finishing powder, as well as bronzer and diffuse highlighter and contour application.

Labelle Makeup UK

Erica Ifeka is the creative genius behind Labelle which started in 2015 and has developed a loyal army of creative makeup fans..  Take a closer on their website at their sponges.  Specifically the pro sponge.  The flat edge is unlike most other sponges gives you the best of allows for fast application on the forehead and cheeks especially as it doubles in size when dampened.  It also picks up powder with ease for baking.
