More Black women in the UK than ever are embracing their natural hair. According to a report by hair brand, Ms Hair, the lockdown has resulted in an increase of almost 30% of Black women wearing their hair natural.
The pandemic has impacted our lives in many ways, particularly as professionals have been encouraged to work from home. Ms Hair spoke to 316 Black women in the UK, to explore how COVID-19 and the recent lockdown has changed their hairstyle choices for work and the reasons why.
The results showed that 76% of Black women now wear their hair natural after lockdown, which is an increase of 28%.
The majority of Black women have used lockdown to give their hair a rest A few experienced with colour and braids while others went for the big chop.
Furthermore, 51% felt very comfortable rocking their natural hair for work during lockdown in Zoom calls.
Although some Black women have always felt comfortable wearing natural hairstyles, the lockdown has given more of them the opportunity to experiment with different natural hairstyles for work.
Black Lives Matter exploding in June has opened up room for conversations surrounding Black women and their hair. We expect to see more Black women embracing their hair and it becoming less of a big deal.
