My Skincare Life - Saleam T. Singleton

Saleam Singleton has a background in PR and photo/video production. Currently he is a content creator who writes for Byrdie and Ask Men.

He focuses on skincare and beauty from a male point of view. Saleam took time out to tell us about his skincare life.

I first became interested in skincare in my early high school years. I started having acne, which impacted my self esteem, so skincare became a solution as well as an escape from my teenage life issues.

I’m influenced by older men and women who age gracefully. I think of people like Denzel or Obama who get finer with age. I don’t think they obsess over skincare but I’m inspired by their ability to maintain their mojo. I also don’t think they’re fighting age and they look amazing.

When I was a teen I started using prescribed benzoyl peroxide. I eventually started purchasing products from Neutrogena, Noxzema, Clearasil, and Sea Breeze. Over the years I’ve learned to accept my skin and not to force things. If I’m breaking out I let it be. I’ve learned to let my skin tell me what it needs. I don’t overdue anything.

My skincare has involved because I know a lot about it. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about ingredients and myself most importantly. My regime is a reflection of understanding my skin goals and concerns. Plus I also know what I want to maintain, unlike when I was younger where I was only thinking about the moment.

In terms of the skincare space I think men are generally well catered to as far as products are concerned. Conversations around men and skincare are becoming more normal and new brands and communities are forming. Through skincare men are able to tap into other forms of self-care. I can see the industry shifting to anticipate these broader interests.

I’ve been using Susanne Kaufmann’s Cleaning Gel all year. It helps keep my skin free of maskne. Essentials By Temi Radiance Elixir Oil is a long-time holy grail of mine. I also love Temi’s Clay Mask. Paula’s Choice Ultra-Light Hydrating Fluid is one of my go-to moisturising sunscreens. Urban Hydration makes an amazing Hair Honey Moisturizer that I am in love with.
