Mandelic Acid for Black & Asian Skin
Mandelic Acid seems to be all the rage in the skincare world and you would have to be under a rock not to notice how popular it is. So what exactly is this form of acid? Also how does it work on darker skin tones? We spoke to Aesthetician and CEO of Westroom Aesthetics, Dija Ayodele who gives the lowdown.
How effective is Mandelic Acid on darker skin tones?
Mandelic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid and it’s as effective on darker skin just as the other acids like glycolic acid and lactic acid that sit within this family. It’s a great option for oily skin tones as it is oil soluble so helps in tackling excess sebum on the skin.
Also due to its larger molecule size, it penetrate the skin more gently, which is a plus for sensitive skin types. However, I wouldn’t say its more effective over another AHA, it depends on skin type and preference.
If you are trying to deal with pigmentation would Mandelic Acid be ideal?
It would help in terms of exfoliating to slough off pigmented skin cells. It would also help in tackling some of the primary causes of pigmentation such as once and breakouts, but it wouldn’t necessarily be the ingredient that clears and fades discolouration.
Can it be used everyday?
Yes it can. It has a good safety profile, but as with all things in skincare, if you’re new to it, then staggering your use is advised.
What form would you advise Mandelic Acid to be used in?
Cleansers, serums, moisturisers are always a good options. The use amongst product is varied.
