Too Faced Born This Way Super Coverage Multi-use Sculpting Concealer
Recently Too Faced released a new formula of their existing Born This Way Concealer. This comes along with the shade extension of their Born This Way Foundation. The new concealer range comes in a total of 20 shades with nine of the shades designed to work for deeper skin tones.
The Born This Way Concealer claims to be a concealer, contour, highlight and retouch with a super perfecting natural finish. It's also claimed to give a hydrated photo-ready complexion. The concealer also gives a full coverage as it is highly pigmented, and is designed to last for up to 12 hours without appearing cakey or dry. It is packaged in a frosted glass tube with a thick wand to apply your concealer.
The shade I received is Chestnut and after using this concealer for a couple of weeks I can say that it’s become one of my favourite higher end concealer formulas. All of the claims regarding the formula are true. It is definitely a more hydrating one which works great for under my eyes. I sometimes find that some concealers are quite drying and can make my under eye look cakey and dry, but this one does not.
I also did not find it to settle into any fine lines under my eyes. The concealer also had a very good lasting power, and it did not fade throughout the day. I’d say it is more of a medium to full coverage one and it can definitely be built on without appearing cakey. I also did not feel the need to retouch throughout the day (although I’ve never retouched my concealer regardless of how it wears). I found that it left my under eyes looking quite smooth, especially when set with powder and it also blended very easily.
Another thing that impressed me about this concealer is just how much product you get in each bottle. A standard foundation bottle contains 30ml / 1 fl.oz of product, the Born This Way Concealer contains half of that at 15ml / 0.50 fl.oz. That’s a lot more than you get in most concealers. However, despite the generous amount I’m still not sure about the steep price tag of £24 which is a similar price point to a mid-to-high range foundation.
When this concealer was released a lot of people were comparing it to the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. I have been using that particular concealer for about a year now and I have to say that I personally do not find them to be similar. The Tarte Shape Tape is definitely more mattifying and longer lasting, and it also provides a much fuller coverage with a very small amount. If I were to compare the Born This Way Concealer to any other concealer, I’d say it’s very similar to the Revolution Beauty Conceal and Define Concealer in its formula. The great thing is the Revolution Concealer is only £4 compared to the £24 price tag of the Born This Way Concealer.
One thing that I did not particularly enjoy about the concealer is the fact that it does definitely give me more of a dewy look than others. I prefer to keep it under my eyes, however when I’ve used it to highlight my forehead, nose and chin areas I’ve found that became oily quite quickly. My t-zone area gets oily on a normal day, but with this concealer I find that after only a couple of hours I’m oily and the concealer feels slightly tacky. However under my eyes remains flawless!
Another issue I’ve had with the concealer is the shade range. Although there are nine shades that are designed for darker skin tones, I find them to be very light with most having a very golden or orange under tone. I also find that the darkest shade in the range is nowhere near deep enough for someone with a dark skin tone to ‘sculpt’ with as they claim we should be able to do. I think if that’s part of the purpose of the concealers then there should be shades than run deep enough for all to use them in this multi-use way.
As I mentioned before I really enjoy using the product and I’d say that if you are tempted to give it a go then you should. It’s one I wouldn’t hesitate recommending, although be aware that it is quite expensive for what it is.
