Sarah-Jane Crawford - TV Presenter
Growing up in a community where aging well is almost a given, I think I just took it for granted. Suddenly, I found myself scrambling for the SPF and collagen.
How did you get into your role as a broadcaster?
It’s funny, most people start in radio and move into TV, but I did the opposite. My first job was in shopping TV, which I found out about through a friend, who I met on Shipwrecked. A few months later, I landed a role at Remedy Productions, working on youth programming. I also signed with an agent who managed big names like Trevor Nelson and Zane Lowe, leading to an opportunity at Radio 1Xtra.
Please tell us about the concept of Clean Curls?
Clean Curls was created from my desire to solve a personal problem. After stopping chemical hair straightening, I embraced my natural texture during pregnancy in 2020. With salons closed, many people began embracing their natural hair, and pregnancy made me more aware of the products I used. I realised there was a gap in the market for genuinely clean, affordable products. Many "clean" products weren’t truly non-toxic, and the ones on the market were too expensive. Motivated by equity, especially for people of colour, I created Clean Curls to provide healthier, affordable haircare for everyone.
Who is Clean Curls aimed at?
I promise, Clean Curls is truly for every curl type and ethnicity - especially for Afro-textured hair (3C to 4C). After extensive testing and feedback, our custard even won a Cosmo Beauty Award for defining curls without flaking or drying out. Our sulfate-free shampoo cleanses without stripping moisture, ideal for textured hair, while the conditioner is a miracle detangler, packed with nourishing oils that improve hair health. Our multi-use oil is a game changer for hair, scalp, and skin.
How did you source your chemists and the right people to work with?
When searching for manufacturers, I prioritised finding a UK-based partner to maintain quality control. Although I lacked technical knowledge, I knew which ingredients to use and avoid. The process was tough, especially with retail interest before the product was created, but I eventually found a manufacturer who understood my vision. The first samples were nerve-wracking, but the shampoo only needed minor tweaks, and the conditioner exceeded my expectations. It was a whirlwind year of learning and excitement, resulting in products I’m incredibly proud of.
What is your skincare routine?
I keep my skincare routine simple, though I know I should prioritise more selfcare like facials. Life gets busy, but it’s important to take time for relaxation. Recently, I noticed changes in my skin, which surprised me. After having my girls at 39 and 40, I focused on losing weight and dropped 20 pounds with a personal trainer. But I looked in the mirror and felt like I’d aged five years overnight, which made me scramble for SPF and collagen. It was a mix of weight loss, motherhood, and aging, but it made me realise I need to care for my skin more.
