Vanessa Sanyauke - Podcaster and CEO

“The beauty industry has evolved a lot. It’s no longer just about heavy glam and contouring now, there’s a real focus on a natural, soft glam look.”

How did you get into the life as an entrepreneur?

I started Girls Talk as a side hustle back in 2013, while working in financial services. At the time, I was balancing roles as a Diversity and Inclusion Manager at UK Parliament, Head of Corporate Responsibility at a global law firm, and Director at an international bank. By 2021, my business had grown significantly, generating more than double my salary. That’s when I decided to take the leap and transition into full-time entrepreneurship, leaving behind the corporate world to focus on scaling Girls Talk.

Describe a typical day in your life.

Every day is different depending on where I am. I travel frequently for work, whether it’s to Berlin or the US to meet with clients. When I'm home in the UK, I start my day early, typically around 6 a.m. I love starting with a workout, then I enjoy a quiet morning ritual of journaling, affirmations, and listening to podcasts with a cup of coffee. After that, my day kicks into gear with virtual calls and meetings. I usually have lunch around 1pm., and in the evenings, I attend networking events or other work-related engagements. My day is a mix of focused work and maintaining important connections.

What was your first beauty product?

My mum introduced me to skincare when I was just 11 years old. She gifted me Clinique’s iconic three-step routine; facial soap, toner, and moisturiser. That’s when I first started understanding the importance of skincare, and it stuck with me ever since.

Tell us what's in your makeup bag

My makeup bag is packed with some of my absolute essentials! I’ve got NARS Foundation, MAC Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil, NARS Concealer, and Kiko Lip Gloss. I always have Charlotte Tilbury Setting Powder to combat my oily skin, along with MAC Bronzer, Fenty Beauty Highlighter, and Danessa Myricks Blush. And of course, I can't live without Summer Fridays Lip Balm.

What are your favourite foundations?

I’m a big fan of both NARS and Estee Lauder foundations. As someone with oily skin, I need a foundation that can last all day without getting greasy, and both of these brands do an incredible job. They give me that flawless glow while staying put, which is so important for my busy schedule.

Which hair products do you use?

For my hair, I swear by Design Essentials Shampoo and Conditioner. I also use Patten Beauty’s Leave-In Conditioner, and KeriCare First Step Shampoo for a deep clean. For added hydration, I turn to Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Deep Conditioner. It’s a game-changer for my hair’s health and texture.

Which skincare products do you use?

Skincare is a key part of my routine, especially with oily skin and acne. I use a prescription tretinoin treatment to help manage my acne, alongside Medik 8’s Calming Cleanser. I also love SkinCeuticals for their brightening treatments and SPF. My go to for hydration is The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid, and I rely on SkinCeuticals’ Vitamin C Serum for its antioxidant benefits.

How do you think the beauty scene now compares to pre-2020?

The beauty industry has evolved a lot, especially in terms of education and development. It’s no longer just about heavy glam and contouring now, there’s a real focus on a natural, soft glam look. People are taking more time with their routines and embracing a more barefaced approach, which I absolutely love. There’s also been a shift toward skincare - first beauty, which I think is a positive move for the industry.
