Black Girl Sunscreen
Black Girl Sunscreen AKA BGS was created for melanin skin to provide sun protection without the ashy and white cast that is left by most high factor sunscreens on dark skin. For many reasons I was interested in BGS, but the main reason was that even when a sunscreen has been hailed as ‘transparent’ or ‘no white residue’ most of the time it doesn’t work on my skin tone. Summer was in full swing in the UK when I received this so I incorporated it into my routine straightaway.
BGS is a factor 30 ultra-sheer moisturising and fragrance free sunscreen. It’s been formulated with natural oils like carrot seed and jojoba oil to moisture your skin. Plus the active ingredients for sun protection is oxybenzone and paraben free. The active ingredients in this sunscreen are avobenzone, which is a common sunscreen ingredient that offers both UVA and UVB protection, however it breaks down very quickly..
BGS has also added octisalate which offers longer lasting protection and allows you to absorb the full range of UVB rays from the sun. Other active ingredients include homosalate which is used as a chemical UV filter and finally octocrylene which helps sunscreen to penetrate your skin.
I found BGS to be extremely lightweight despite the oils and shea butter that it contains. It sinks in quickly on my skin plus it is truly sheer and leaves zero cast. It’s the first and only sunscreen I have used with natural oils and I can definitely tell the difference. My skin was left feeling soft and radiant. I have tested BGS on my face and I am happy to report it doesn’t clog pores and it caused me no irritation.
I have really enjoyed using this product and I highly recommend it. I only wish it came in a bigger size; it's only 89ml but it has lasted me about two months of frequent use. It has well formulated active ingredients that have been proven to provide protection against the sun and a purchase would support a small black owned business.
